This article actually adapted from my assignment for the Features Writing subject that is about "review"
while I 'm in semester 3 in Journalism course, Faculty of Communication and Media Study UiTM Shah Alam, Malaysia.
Detective Conan animated series or cartoon actually is a Japanese cartoon that is adapted from a comic series or known as Manga that tells about story of a high-school student detective, Kudou Shinichi, 17 who was being poisoned by a mysterious organize-criminal organization called The Black Organization and later become a 7 years-old kid or 10 years younger than his real age with another identity that is Conan Edogawa along with a high-intelligence way of thinking. In simple word, the series is all about the life of a detective or private investigator that always cooperate with police agency and also with the FBI and CIA regarding his principle of revealing the truth mostly about criminal mind in operating their organize crime.
Basically the main character of this series that is Kudou Shinichi that later on becoming Edogawa Conan when his body is shrinking due to the poison which he was forced to take by the criminal organization (Black Organization) is inspired by a most relatively-known fictional detective character that is Sherlock Holmes until Kudou himself is alias as “Sherlock Holmes of Heisei Era”. So, in order to revert himself from a 7-years old kid back to his real age and body size, he is perforce to trace the Black Organization in order to search for the antidote for the drug that he unwillingly takes until make him transform to a kid besides intends to exterminate that high-profile syndicate which the organization works for.
The ‘Edogawa Conan’ name itself is actually derives from the name of in reality two mystery-novel writers named Sir Author Conan Doyle that is the author of Sherlock Holmes series late in 1880’s and Edogawa Ranpo who also is a mystery-novel writer in Japan years ago. Then it is not weird when Detective Conan series is not only watched by kids or teenagers, instead of the adults or youths are also watching this series that is to increase their knowledge about how to solve mysterious matter that rarely can be solve by ordinary or most people.
What makes Detective Conan differs from another cartoon is that although it is clearly a fiction-genre that can be say as illogical, but many real-facts especially the historical and also scientific facts are mostly included in the plot. The facts are mostly about the using of chemical substances, for example cyanide acids that causing its consumer to die immediately with some usual sign like will produce something like peanut-smell in the victims’ mouth. In other words, many crime-scene-investigation or forensic basic knowledge procedures can be known when watching Detective Conan series like the usefulness of ‘luminol’ that being used in detecting blood trace.
Also it is ought to be mention that not in biology and chemistry field solely Detective Conan exposes to its audiences, but as well as in other field in sciences such as physiology and physics. For example, in physic field, Detective Conan introducing the usefulness of fulcrum in order to make organized homicide or to measure the speed of a bullet that is being shoots from fire arms after measuring the relationship between momentum and air resistance.
In same side, Detective Conan series always showing reality or non-fiction historical facts in its plot where in investigating about a case, sometimes the characters in this cartoon have to go to certain historical places that really exist in real life or to relate the character with some in reality person that already become a historical remaining. For example there have been one episode in Detective Conan that tells about a real life character that was regarded as historical personage in late Russian Emperor Revolution like Grigori Rasputin besides introducing the character of Jack the Ripper, a sadistic killer that exist in reality world in 1888 at Whitechapel, a capital in London.
Besides that, what makes Detective Conan can attract its audience regardless of the age-level is that there are many elements which become interest in most of the people like the element of action, romance, and humor and so on. Certainly, the element of action is already become the main element in this cartoon where it is ought to have this element in this series in revealing and also eradicate the culprit of a criminal action whether it is for eradicate a murderer or a robber or a kidnapper.
In terms of romance and loving elements, it can clearly see that in this cartoon, it show that Kudou Shinichi have a girlfriend named Ran Mouri who is a daughter of a private investigator or detective, Kogorou Mouri. Although both of them loving each other, but Kudou Shinichi do not tell Ran about the truth of his conditions of transforming into a 7 years-old kid although Edogawa Conan himself stay with the Mouri’s family. In other words, Ran knowing Shinichi very much as well as she knows Edogawa Conan who stays with her but she does not know that Shinichi and Conan is a same person with two different identities. The reason of why Shinichi does not telling Ran that Edogawa Conan is actually his other identification is that he does not want his lover family are putting in danger condition when the Black Organization members operative principle is that they will kill anyone who knows about their organization and also with the people around the person who knows about their syndicates.
It is to be noted that in solving criminal minds, Detective Conan main character is not only cooperate with local police department, but also cooperate with foreign intelligence agencies like Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in eradicating the Black Organization. This make this series is not feel so boring although until now, it already reach as many as more than 800 episodes because of it is not solely show how police works in demolishing crime, but also show on how the CIA and FBI doing their espionage jobs. Through this, indirectly the audience will know certain terms in espionage like the NOC that stands for Non-Official Cover, OC that is Official Cover, Wittiness Protection Program conducted by the FBI, Face Painting undercover makeup like in Mission Impossible films and so on, .
Also it is to be noted that in this series, usually the director or the main painter of this Manga take the phenomenological that usually the culprit of a criminal case is a person who is not being suspicious in the initial. The culprit is not shown until the end of an episode or case after the trick conducted by the culprit in performing his or her crime is being deducted by Conan Edogawa or Detective Mouri using reasoning deductive technique. Then this make sense that this cartoon is really generating its audience’s mind in initially defining who is the real culprit before it is revealed by thos two detectives or another character who also having high-intelligence deductive reasoning skills.
